I have an idea for a new sort of biblical (and other religious text) hermeneutic: namely, identifying and extracting all of the passages that could involve the tinge of the writer's or the religion's self-interest. What sort of text would emerge? If you are interested, pls see my post at http://deligentia.wordpress.com/2009/11/01/self-interest-in-religion-and-the-related-conflicts-of-interest/

I thought you might be interested in learning about OUR Jewish traditions which embrace the real Christ. We are the Frankist Association of America. One of our members has a new book out:

These are our teachings passed on through generations. If you can't afford the book you can see the website of one of our teachers - http://www.stephanhuller.blogspot.com.

Here is another video that discusses the UNHCR's Gimme Shelter campaign for World Refugee Day. Ben Affleck and Mick Jagger are involved and its pretty interesting. Some of the facts included are staggering.

Bryan,
I understand your frustration in engaging fundamentalists. However, I think the important notion to keep in mind is that we must steer away from imposition. Concerning "selectivity": we all choose what we read; what journals we subscribe to; to which portions we listen to from the sermon; we select our interpretative tradition. Faith and personal interest have and always will be inextricably bound (see the circumstances in which the canon was formed). I think our task at hand is to expose that alternative possibilities, contrary to dominant opinion, do in fact exist. As ministers we should expose and make available. We should be concerned with showing for all to see that the world is not an absolute as it is. An extrapolist of moral and ethical imports would be a good job description of a person engaging with the "sophisticated hermeneutic" to which you referred. My only point of divergence is that much more than "translation" is involved when we speak of a modern or indeed a postmodern context. I would go so far as to describe the process as an imaginative transmutation.

The CoC has been for me a tradition full of mixed feelings, blessings and curses- as any tradition carries with it I presume. I encourage you to be an agent of change. For me on the other hand, considering I want to pursue ministry as a vocation, I no longer see it feasible to stay within the tradition that chose me- for obvious reasons. I have now chosen a new one. I have chosen to narrate a different story. Thanks for communicating and playing a part.

Amen, sir. AMEN. It is SO difficult, however, to have this conversation with a literalist. "But Paul CLEARLY states that..." Argh! Even when you tell them Paul also states that we should greet each other with a holy kiss, and that women should cover their heads, not wear jewelry, etc; they so easily become selective. It's so hard for me to want to stay within the cfC tradition. But if it's ever going to change, it's going to change through our generation. The same resistance to a more sophisticated hermeneutic exists in the field of law. The sentiment is that if you can't interpret a text at face value, then the entire edifice of the law crumbles. The definition of wisdom in hermeneutics, maybe, is the ability to intuit the principle behind the text, and to translate this into a modern context.
